A visit to the Mayan Ruins found near Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico.

Palenque's 500 buildings are spread over 15sq km but only a relatively few, in fairly compact central area have been excavated. Everything at Palenque was built without metal tools, pack animals or the wheel. The site stands at the precise point where the first hills rise out of the Gulf Coast plain. Most of the gray stone edifices would have been painted bright red at the peak of Palenque's power.

Courtyard with amazingly large carved figures Crowds scurrying about during a break in the rain Ever seen a leaf-elf? They're very rare. It's fun to think what these building must have looked like in their glory The Queen's Baths: a gorgeous waterfall that pools five or six times
Templo de las Inscripciones (Temple of the Inscriptions) El Palacio: the tower is thought to have been an observatory. This bowl was found in a tomb with the pieces of bone you see placed inside by a Maya Another view of the town of Palenque Brilliant blue butterfly on the path out of Palenque
The "combs" on the roof of this buildings are one of the hallmarks of Palenque construction This mural is in such good condition. The young man on the right (dead almost a year at the making) is being presented with offerings from his mother, dead about one month at the making. This is looking down from the top of a wide staircase. Notice the detail work in between the stones.
