OUR JOURNAL

9-11 April, 2000

We got to Tom's around 10 a.m. to start The Big Project. First thing we noticed is that Tom's cuiser, Das Beast, is huge! Makes us want 35s on Sandy …

We spent Sunday through Tuesday in a haze of taking apart, going to the store, hunting down tools and making a lot less headway than we thought! We figured on spending four or five days up here. Little do we know, but it will take us two full weeks working everyday but one to get back to Carmel. Brian came by on Sunday and Tom was around all day helping out. We look quite forward to the week-day evenings when our friends get off work and come play.

12 April, 2000

Today was one of those days where at about 4 p.m. you have two choices: laugh hysterically or be really pissed off because nothing, but nothing is going your way.

So we broke down giggling and cackling in Office Depot when it took four check-stand drones, three checkstands and 20 minutes to buy a $2.15 piece of plastic. That was after spending an hour and a half going three miles on Highway 101.

Managed to work on the truck for most of the day, oh wait, no, no, that's not right. Managed to work on the truck for about two hours -- Beebee napping and fighting with her electrical project and Steve pulling the bolts out of the oil pan, without pulling the pan itself off and figuring out the final part of the alternator install.

Tom's wife, Mire, made us a wonderful Japanese fish, cabbage and goyza soup for dinner. Incredibly yummy. Brian Sullivan joined us and then the three of us drove to his house, had a few beers and watched Scarface (Steve thinks it's the best Pacino ever made). The movies they made in the early 80s are sooo slow! We had a conversation, Beebee updated the site and still managed to follow the plot line. How old is Michelle Pfiefer anyway? She looks about 15 in this movie.

13-15 April, 2000

The oil pan is finally off. Painting commenced soon thereafter. Electrical work is progressing. All in all we are pretty not-impressed with ourselves for getting this work done quickly. Boy are we slow! Our only defense is that we read the instructions about four times before we do anything… and usually we return to the instructions again mid-job. We are still pretty afraid of breaking things.

16 April, 2000

Went to Tom's with wind in our sails and fire in our bellies. Time to get some stuff done. Unfortunately, the weather was against us and painting was just sort of impossible- 60 degrees and 100% humidity does not a good spray-paint day make! Brian swung by for a bit with his friend Cris, we did work some more on the electrical, and Steve attacked the side cover, but by the end of the day we hadn't finished much.

We were lucky enough, however, to enjoy a great dinner with all of Steve's siblings, which made the day a good one.

17 April, 2000

Took the day off today, sorta. Mostly we decided that painting in the rain was a bad idea so we slept in then took care of some stuff on the phone and computer. Towards the end of the day we realized that not working on the truck was actually worse than spending the day working on it. We kept thinking of how much work we had left to do.

Highlight of the day was going to the Dutch Goose with Karyn, Randy and Brian. The Goose is sort of a local hangout from Steve's youth so it was really fun to relax there for a few hours and enjoy an adult beverage or two.

18 through 21 April, 2000

Put Sandy back together, and boy do we wish it were just as simple as that. Everything takes about three times as long as you think it will.

Tuesday night though, we had a special treat. Brian Sullivan and some of his buddies talked us into accompanying them to the Jimmy Buffett concert at Shoreline Amphitheater. Great show. Beebee overindulged on the blended-rum adult beverages, but Brian came through later with some superb corn dogs. Jimmy was terriffic, playing all the faves and Steve got a T-shirt to boot. A very fun night, indeed. Thanks for the invite and the good company, Brian.

Wednesday was back to Sandy for Steve and Brian's futon until 2 p.m. for J. Not only did she wake up feeling a little dehydrated, she also woke up sick. Needless to say, she wasn't a lot of help to Steve or Sandy today. Very frustrated with the side-cover, Steve made a call to Mudrak and the guy told him there was no way to get it off without bending it. Had he only known that three days ago! Oh well, another lesson learned.

Thursday brought, you guessed it!, more working on Sandy and an even worse-feeling Beebee. Here's a shot from underneath Sandy before the oil pan went back on. This is where Steve spends most of his time …

Friday and Beebee's worse, Steve's a little sick too and we think we've got a couple hours work left on Sandy. HA. We (OK, Steve and Tom) finished at about 10 p.m. Ugh.

A huge thank you goes to Tom and Mire for putting up with us, being so incredibly kind to us, and for feeding us many, many times when we were cold and tired. Especially thank you to Mire for all of the incredible meals you prepared for us. She's a wonderful cook, who always made us feel very, very welcome in her home.

**A complete write-up of the work accomplished at Tom's is soon to come with lots of pics.

23 April, 2000

We celebrated Easter by going on a short walk in Carmel with parents and siblings, through a pretty park with towering trees and a babbling brook. Beebee is still sick :^( In the afternoon we had our very own Easter egg hunt for Isabelle and Austin. The family all came to Carmel for supper -- superb ham by mom. Although at this point J still can't taste a thing and crashed out on the couch around 8 p.m., the rest of the family enjoyed themselves tremendously.

24 and 25 April, 2000

Monday and we're still sick, but enjoying the warm sunshine nonetheless. Tuesday and still nursing ourselves, we laid low and worked inside until about 3 p.m. when we left for San Jose and our now two-year old nephew's birthday party. This guy is going to break sooo many hearts when he's older.

The whole fam was there and his big sister, Isabelle (almost 4), did a pretty good job of giving him the spotlight. The afternoon was warm and breezy -- perfect for the outdoor festivities.

26 April, 2000

Got up feeling better. J could taste a little today. Big excitement. Decided over coffee that we want to hand make or buy from an individual craftsman all gifts from now on. Shouldn't be too hard south of the border… Ran some errands in the gorgeous 80+ degree weather this morning, then Beebee took advantage of the back 40 and summer day to work on her newest project: a wind chime. It was coming along nicely by 7:30 p.m. when it finally cooled off enough that she had to put something on besides her bathing suit. Dad took us all out to dinner at a little seafood place called Sandbar and Grill on a warf in Monterrey. Cute restaurant, with a fun view of the harbor and the best fried oysters the boys had tasted in a long time. Dad decided he was 100-smackers sure that a seven-foot ROW BOAT had circumnavigated the globe back in '79 or '80 with no support. Steve, Mom, Jocelyn, the four people at the table next to us and our waitress, Judy are real sure he's wrong. We'll give you the exciting truth by Wednesday of next week (that's how long Dad's got to prove it).

27-30 April, 2000

Beebee is just shy of dead, or at least she feels that way. Guess she pushed herself to hard when she started getting better. Bummer.
